Delta Dental Foundation provides $2.6 million to improve oral health in 2015

Okemos, Mich. —In 2015, the Delta Dental Foundation provided $2.6 million in financial support to organizations, programs and education institutions across Michigan, Ohio and Indiana that are dedicated to improving the oral and overall health of children and adults.

“This past year we were able to increase access to dental care for those in need, provide oral health education to more people and fund more programs that are making a tangible difference in the communities we serve,” said Teri Battaglieri, Director for the Delta Dental Foundation. “In 2015, we were proud to provide funding for: the first Mission of Mercy event in Indiana; Chew on This!, an interactive oral health exhibit at Impression 5 Science Center in Michigan; and pilot the introduction of oral health education to 7,000 children and their parents via the Reach Out and Read program in Ohio.

Other major investments included:                                                                    

  • Funding to equip 15 dental treatment rooms in seven clinics across Michigan, Ohio and Indiana;
  • Nearly 70 community grants allocated to programs committed to improving the oral health of low-income children and adults;
  • 75 scholarships and awards granted to high-performing students who exhibit a passion for dentistry;
  • Funding for community water fluoridation and children’s dental sealant programs;
  • Outfitting of three mobile dental coaches to provide care to students in urban areas of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana;
  • Oral health kits provided to patients at Lansing, Michigan’s Sparrow Hospital to decrease the prevalence of hospital-acquired pneumonia;
  • Continuing education seminars attended by 1,200 dental professionals; and
  • Brush! oral health curriculum provided to 40,000 preschool-aged students.
Since its inception in 1980, the DDF has donated more than $20 million in funding to improve oral health in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.
